Ten Years of adidas SPZL

Originally debuting as a handball shoe in the Three-Stripes’ home turf of Germany back in the late 70s, who would have thought that the silhouette would have global influence in 2024? Revived by brand consultant and designer Gary Aspden in 2014, the adidas SPEZIAL line manifested out of a genuine love for the brand, paying homage to its iconic heritage and legacy. Drawing from the archive to inspire contemporary bodies of apparel and footwear, the line has invited a dynamic bunch of collaborators, like Liam Gallagher, C.P Company and Roy Keane. A pretty impressive line-up, right? 

And now, celebrating 10 years of the SPZL’s revival, Aspden debuts the Pre-Spring 2024 capsule; exuding a distinctively nostalgic steez. Joining the model’s goated hall-of-fame is none other than actor and artist Ashley Walters. Best known for his role of ‘Dushane’ in global series Top Boy – or from spitting bars in So Solid Crew (if you’re an OG), Walters is a known figure in the creative industry. An experienced influence in and amongst London’s culture, the pairing with adidas SPZL makes a lot of sense.

Kicking off with some newness, the Whitworth SPZL draws inspiration from a plethora of 80s runners. Boasting a sleek grey hue that nods to the nostalgic adidas clipper, the silhouette is crafted from a blend of suede, nylon and mesh.

Handball Pro SPZL | IG8942

Also landing as a new addition to the Spezial crew, the Handball Pro SPZL takes notes from a hidden gem handball silhouette, uncovered by Gary Aspden himself. A rubber gum cupsole maintains the spezial-esque essence, whilst a tonal palette keeps things fresh for SS24.

Moston Super SPZL | ID3515

Taking us back to the mid 70s, when the adidas Artic was knocking about, the Moston Super SPZL expresses a reminiscent look. Showcasing a supple suede green upper with contrasting leather 3-Stripes, tongue and heel – contrasting stitching effortlessly completes the look.

Wensley SPZL | IG8937

Returning on the scene as a veteran, the Wensley SPZL reminds us exactly why we fell in love with the silhouette in 2017. Featuring an asymmetrical upper, the sneaker is given a textural finish via nylon underlays and hairy suede panelling.

Gazelle SPZL | IG8940 / G8940

The Gazelle SPZL of Fall Winter 2023 makes a comeback in two versions: one featuring an all-black colour scheme with a suede upper, paying homage to the Pulsebeat SPZL, while the other showcases a chalk white denim upper adorned with subtly contrasting white stripes.

adidas SPZL Pre-Spring 2024 Collection | Apparel

Rounding off the Pre-Spring 2024 collection is an assisting range of streamlined apparel, featuring jackets, tracksuits, shorts, and tops to complement. The Trentham and Wingrove jackets are included amongst the Angelzarke tracksuit ensemble, Rossendale Shorts, Polo shirt, and Lytham t-shirt. Additionally, the collection includes the coveted Brinscall bag, socks Mod Trefoil cap and towel.
