The Nike Air Max 95

Admired for its unique design and athletic responsiveness, the Air Max 95 has been a huge hit since its release in the mid 90s, receiving special attention in Japan in particular.
The model was actually known as the Air Max, or Air Max SC, upon its first appearance in 1995, before being officially recognised as the Air Max 95 a short time later.
Designed by Sergio Lozano, the silhouette was given a very different aesthetic than the Air Max models that had come before it.
The shoe's design was based on human anatomy, with the lacing system resembling a ribcage, the outsole inspired by the spine, and the mesh on the upper designed to look like muscle fibre. By layering stitched and compression moulded synthetic suede on the upper, a spectacular look was achieved.
The AM95 was the first Air Max model to use air cushions in the forefoot, and feature a mini-Swoosh on the heel. A first-of-its-kind black outsole was also introduced on the model, intended to help hide dirt.

Atmos x Nike Air Max 95

While the AM95 has been the subject of numerous collaborations, some of the most popular have been with Atmos, who originally dropped the 'Viotech' in 2003. An earth-toned sneaker with accents of purple, it was extremely hard to cop.
Later in 2006, Atmos also designed a limited edition version of the silhouette as part of the Nike Air Max 95 'Animal' collection. The incredible mix of faux-fur animal prints adorning the sneaker made it an instant fan favourite, with zebra, tiger and leopard all sneaking into the mix.
Coming together again in 2018, the 'We Love Nike' was an aggressive black and red colorway from the brand, stamped with Air Max branding throughout and also featuring exclusive insoles.

Parra x Nike Air Max 95

Amsterdam-based artist and designer Parra collaborated with Nike on the Air Max 1 in 2005, resulting in two incredibly sought-after colorways, 'Amsterdam' and 'Cherrywood'.
Following the huge success, Parra collaborated again with Nike in 2008, this time on the Nike Air Max 95, Cortez, and Air Max 90.
The Air Max 95 'Running Man' featured bold and vibrant colours and was instantly a massive hit, paying homage to the artist's signature style.

Popular AM95 Colorways

nike air max 95 neon

Neon

The 'Neon' was the very first colorway on the Nike Air Max 95 model, said to be inspired by rainy days at the Nike campus, and the Oregon landscape.
Using a black, neon yellow and white colour palette, the four wavy lines on the side fade from light grey to black in a gradient design.
This iconic colorway has been re-released over 10 times since its first release in 1995.
nike air max 95 grape

Grape

Also released in 1995, but as a women's exclusive, the 'Grape' is a simple colorway in grey and white with hints of purple on the tongue, but its loved for its minimalist look.
Since its first release, it has been re-launched several times, also in men's sizing.
nike air max 95 solar red

Solar Red

The 'Solar Red' was a vibrant colorway, utilising red accents in an otherwise monochromatic colour theme, that helped define the AM95 range when it was also released in 1995.
After receiving a shout-out in the song 'Hate It Or Love It' by The Game, each re-release over the years has been met with just as much excitement as the initial release.
nike air max 95 z

Z

This experimental zippered version of the model divided the sneaker community, but the streamlined look of the model, taking away the standard tongue and lace loops, gave a futuristic vibe to the silhouette with a low-key colorway in what was undoubtably a bold move.
nike air max 95 stash

Stash

The 'Stash' was the first version of the AM95 to feature a speckled midsole.
Released in 2006, it was dropped as part of a collaboration with New York graffiti artist Stash, and depicted a recognisable theme if you were already familiar with his work.
The blue and grey layers were designed to refer to the transition of the night sky into morning, giving the pair a unique and beautiful theme.
nike air max 95 south beach

South Beach

This Miami Vice-inspired colorway was dropped exclusively in the Miami area in 2008, and became instantly popular due to its colourful pink and teal colour theme. The sharp black and white layers that interspersed the upper made the colours pop even more.
The colorway got an update in 2015 with a grey midsole and neon green Air Max units, but it didn't quite live up to the coveted original.
nike air max 95 country camo

Country Camo

Innovative tech was incorporated in the design of this 2013 military-inspired colorway, with Hyperfuse technology taking the place of the usual mesh and suede materials. This resulted in a seamless, one-piece upper that increased stability, breathability and support.
Treated to an all-over camo print, the 'Country Camo' is a hard-wearing yet lightweight sneaker.
nike air max 95 ekiden red

Ekiden Pack

Paying tribute to its Japanese fans, the Ekiden pack was released in 2013 with five colorways dedicated to the Josai, Kanagawa, Komazawa, Waseda and Toyo Universities.
These top universities pit against each other in a gruelling 219KM relay race, and Nike commemorated their hard-core commitment with this pack.
nike air max 95 persian violet

Persian Violet

Released in 2016, the 'Persian Violet' is inspired by the legendary Nike Air Max BW colorway and has become one of the most popular colorways on the AM95 model.
To add another striking detail to the already beloved black and purple colorway, a 3M reflective panel stretches along the length of the sneaker.
nike air max 95 silver bullet

Silver Bullet

Based on the iconic colorway on the Air Max 97, shiny silver fabric is used throughout the design of the AM95 'Silver Bullet' in a flawless interpretation of the original.
The metallic colorway has been given small hits of vibrant red on the mini-Swoosh and branding to provide a nice hint of contrast.
nike air max 95 ERDL party

ERDL Party

Using four different shades of camo along its side panel for a unique look, the 'ERDL Party' pays tribute with the camouflage pattern developed by the US. Army's Engineer Research and Development Laboratory in the 40s.
The sneaker was a top-selling release for Nike in 2018.
nike air max 95 pink foam

Pink Foam

With pink reflective detailing over the forefoot and pink eyelet panels over black mesh underlays, the 'Pink Foam', also known as 'Gunsmoke Pink', was released in 2020 as part of the Air Max 95's 25th anniversary.
It saw a huge boost in popularity just minutes after celebrity Kim Kardashian posted a picture of herself wearing a pair after her divorce from Kanye West.
