adidas Spezial’s Spring 2025 Collection Debuts Hybrid Sneakers

Few insiders offer as much behind-the-scenes insight and historical expertise on adidas as Gary Aspden, the driving force behind the brand’s revered SPZL line. For Spring 2025, Aspden is refining his approach, mixing up the classic SPZL silhouettes into hybrid silhouettes.

This shift marks a departure from the larger drops of previous years, focusing on quality over quantity.

The Handball Cup, a standout in the line up, blends elements from various archival models bearing the “Handball” name. While its DNA is rooted in the Handball Spezial, it also integrates features from Aspden’s personal favorite, the Handball Top, such as the contrasting overlay at the collar.

The red, white, and blue color scheme echoes the original, while subtle refinements—like a more compact T-toe—differentiate it from past iterations.

Meanwhile, the TRX Mesh receives a modernized makeover, breaking from the strict 1:1 retro philosophy of past Spezial drops. While its original version gained notoriety on the feet of The Who’s Roger Daltrey, this update introduces a wedge sole for a contemporary feel.

A breathable open-knit mesh base, angular overlays, and a molded cutout midsole further redefine the silhouette. The vibrant blue and yellow palette pays homage to its ’70s roots while ensuring it remains fresh for today’s audience.

Other sneakers in the collection include the Failsworth SPZL, inspired by the adidas Barbados, the Roelee SPZL, which bridges the gap between the Gazelle and Whalley SPZL, and the Pampanga SPZL, drawn from the adidas Squire. Finally, there’s the A Aspden SPZL – a hybrid tennis and lifestyle sneaker featuring Aspden’s signature style.

The apparel collection features the Halewood SPZL Parka, Billinge SPZL Hoodie, and Brockhall SPZL Tee. With a sporty vibe, the collection blends materials like ripstop and cotton. Accessories include the ST10 SPZL Bag and Hip Bag, the Mod Trefoil SPZL Cap, and socks.

Release

Set to launch on March 27, 2025, via adidas CONFIRMED and select retailers, the Spezial Spring ‘25 collection is expected to gain further release details, including pricing and store listings, as the date approaches.
