Some things you just don't mess with. The Air Force 1's toe box has been on the list since 1982. Or at least it was.

Nike has taken that famous rounded nose, flattened the front and given it two proper corners. Meet the Nike Air Force 1 Square Toe: still very much an AF1, just with a shape you'll either love straight away or need a second look at. Probably both.

So, What's Actually Changed?

Just the front end, really. Nike has stretched the toe box out a touch and swapped the curve for a straight, flat leading edge with sharp corners either side. From above, it looks more like a loafer or a cowboy boot than the trainer you've been wearing for years.

Everything behind the toe stays put. Same panels, same proportions, same perforations up front, same Swoosh on the side and the same chunky cupsole. Even the outsole has been redrawn to follow the new boxy shape, so the change runs all the way to the ground.

Nike's own preview on SNKRS summed it up nicely, calling it "sleeker, squarer and designed to force a double take on a street classic". Fair.

Triple Black or Triple White?

For the first drop, Nike is keeping things classic with the two most-worn AF1 colourways of all time:

  • Triple Black – black leather with a subtle grain all over, flat black laces, a black midsole with the debossed AIR lettering and a black outsole. The all-black finish makes those corners look extra sharp.

  • Triple White – smooth white leather, rows of perforations on the toe, white laces and a white sole, with a black Nike logo on the insole as the only bit of contrast.

No fancy materials, no colour blocking. Smart move, honestly. With nothing else going on, your eyes go straight to the new shape.

From the Back, You'd Never Know

Here's the fun part. Look at it from behind and it's just an Air Force 1. The heel tab still carries the classic NIKE AIR embroidery, and the side profile only gives the game away when you get to the very front.

That's what makes it work. It's not a brand new silhouette pretending to be an AF1. It's the AF1 you know, with one bold tweak.

Wait, Where Did This Come From?

The square toe made its first appearance on the runway at men's Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, before Nike gave it a proper preview on the SNKRS app in early October. You might also spot it listed as the 'SquAir Toe' at some retailers.

It's also not the only square toe doing the rounds. Boxy fronts have been all over fashion for a while, from loafers to boots, and the trend has already crept into trainers, with Converse turning the All Star into a loafer with the 'Snoafer' earlier this year.

And Nike isn't stopping at black and white. It has also previewed suede versions with western-style details and metal hardware, plus textile pairs in a colourful mismatched plaid. No word yet on when (or if) those will land in the UK.

A Quick AF1 History Lesson

Designed by Bruce Kilgore and named after the US presidential plane, the Air Force 1 launched in 1982 as the first basketball shoe with Nike Air cushioning in the sole. More than four decades later, it's one of the best-selling trainers ever made.

In all that time, the shape has barely changed. It's had thousands of colourways and collabs, but the toe has always been round. That's exactly why this one is getting people talking.

Quick Tip on Sizing

Some European retailers are listing both pairs as women's (WMNS), while other sources say they're unisex. Double-check which size chart the shop is using before you hit checkout.

How about the Drop Date?
