Melitta Baumeister New York City branding on the strap of the Nike Rift Rocker Yukon Brown

Clay, a split toe and a sole that looks like it was shaped by hand. Yep, this one's different.

New York-based designer Melitta Baumeister has teamed up with Nike again, and this time she's taken the Rift somewhere it's never been before: on top of a chunky, sculpted rocker sole. Meet the Nike Rift Rocker, landing in women's sizes in Black/White and Yukon Brown/Light Iron Ore-Black.

Wait, Which Rift Is This Based On?

The Nike Air Rift first turned up in 1996, with a split toe inspired by Kenyan runners and a name borrowed from the Great Rift Valley. It's been a cult favourite ever since, and lately it's shown up in everything from pony hair to ballet-style straps.

Baumeister had no interest in toning any of that down. In her words: "The Nike Rift has such a unique history and distinct relationship to the foot, so I wanted to exaggerate that even further with the Rift Rocker." Mission accomplished, we'd say.

So, What's Going On With That Sole?

It's the first thing you'll notice. The sole is thick and curved, rocking from heel to toe, and Baumeister based it on sculpted clay. Look at the sides and you'll spot deep Swoosh shapes pressed into it, a bit like thumbprints in a lump of clay, while chunks are scooped out at the heel and along the inner side.

Flip it over and there's a Waffle-inspired tread. The Black/White pair keeps it all dark, while the Yukon Brown pair gets a translucent, pale outsole that lets the pattern show through.

"The sculpted sole gives it a completely different presence, almost like the shoe has been molded into form," says Baumeister. Hard to argue with that.

And the Upper?

This is where it parts ways with the classic Rift. The split toe stays, but the open forefoot has been closed up with a tongue and laces, and a wide hook-and-loop strap runs across the top. Some of the original's layered build and straps survive, just reworked.

The leather is distressed, which really shows on the Black/White pair, where the dark finish breaks up into a crackled, worn-in look. The Yukon Brown version is earthier, with Light Iron Ore and black accents.

Any Hidden Details?

Plenty. Raised, stitched Swooshes sit by the toes, Baumeister's name runs along the end of the main strap and there's a strap-end detail at the back. An eye graphic stares out from the heel and the insole, and the tongue carries "MB" branding with a Swoosh.

Underfoot, the insoles show a footprint illustration with "Think Outside" split across the pair. And inside the tongue? The line "You Bring The Body, We Bring The Shape", next to a banana graphic with a Swoosh tucked inside. Very Baumeister.

Is There More to the Collection?

Yes, and it's just as playful. Alongside the shoe, Baumeister and Nike have made:

  • A reversible puffer jacket with detachable sleeves, a removable collar and a hidden tote bag

  • A sculpted track jacket with a detachable ribbed balaclava and a "Molded Clay Swoosh" at the back of the neck

  • Matching track pants with a clay-moulded carabiner, featuring her signature "Nose" key ring

  • Split-toe tabi socks, of course

Hands, eyes and facial contours pop up as motifs throughout. The whole thing ties back to one idea: shaping a material again and again isn't so different from athletic training. Nike and Baumeister unveiled it all in New York at the "Molded by Dedication" showcase.

Has She Worked With Nike Before?

She has. Baumeister has already put her spin on the Vomero and the Pegasus, so the Rift Rocker is the next chapter rather than a first date.
