The Air Jordan 5
Working closely with Michael Jordan, designer Tinker Hatfield created the Air Jordan 5 to be both functional and supportive, but with an aesthetic that reflected the basketball star's mentality.
Highly regarded in the lineup of Air Jordan's history, the Air Jordan 5 features innovative features such as its unique lace locking system, and its association with Michael Jordan has made it an iconic silhouette in sneaker history.
The Air Jordan 5 Design
First released in 1990, and designed by the famous Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 5's design was inspired by fighter jets from World War II. Tinker wanted to create a shoe that embodied speed, aggression, and flight, representing Michael Jordan's playing style on the court.
The AJ5 is constructed using mesh panels for breathability, a reflective 3M tongue, and a set of unique lace locks that keep the fit secure and stable. The Air cushioning technology on the heel provided solid impact protection, combining into a comfortable, durable sneaker.

Transformers
This limited-edition sneaker was released in 2017 to commemorate the Transformers film franchise, and was designed by the leading star Mark Wahlberg. The black upper is transformed by its reflective detailing, glow-in-the-dark outsole, and Transformers logo on the tongue.
Praised for its unique design, the sneaker also received critism for its high price tag. Despite that, the AJ5 'Transformers' remains a popular and coveted collector's item.
Grape
Perhaps the most iconic Air Jordan 5 colorway, the AJ5 'Grape' is highly sought-after and a truly iconic addition to the AJ5 line. Originally released in 1990, it was also released in 2013 as a retro version.
With lace loops that resemble shark teeth, a translucent tongue featuring a holographic Jordan logo, and an upper made from suede, leather and synthetic materials, the clean-cut design is highly versatile.
The white midsole contrasts with icy blue and emerald green accents, while the purple provides a welcome pop of colour.
The 2013 release was a brighter version of the original, and has become a very popular choice amongst sneakerheads.
Black Metallic
The AJ5 'Black Metallic' appeared in 2016, paying homage to the original 1990 colorway.
A metallic silver tongue and shark tooth midsole with reflective 3M detailing add a flair to the black nubuck upper, with fire red accents adding another pop of colour.
Fire Red
Originally released in 1990, the AJ5 'Fire Red' has since been released many more times, in 2000, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2020.
A highly-sought after colorway, it features a white leather upper with vibrant red accents, reflective silver 3M detailing, and an icy blue outsole.
The clean design remains a popular choice amongst sneaker lovers.
Burgundy
This elegant special edition colorway was re-released in August 2023, and featured a luxury suede upper in burgundy. The contrasting stitching and transparent netting on the quarter panel, paired with a reflective silver tongue and icy blue translucent outsole, adds welcome detail to the premium colorway.
The limited edition drop made the sneaker very highly coveted among collectors, and it remains a favourite today.
Oregon
This special edition colorway was released to commemorate the University of Oregon's Ducks. Dropped in September 2020, the sneaker utilised a vibrant green suede upper, accented with black detailing, and a black midsole with icy translucent outsole.
Popular due to its rather unique colour theme and association with the iconic university, the AJ5 'Oregon' had become a collector's item due to its limited release.
Red Suede
Paying homage to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls legacy, the 'Red Suede', released in July 2017, comes in a vibrant red colorway and features a premium suede upper with black detailing. The reflective silver tongue and icy translucent outsole add a subtle shine to the loud colouring.
With a limited release and high demand, the AJ5 'Red Suede' is a true collector's item, loved for its sleek design and bold colour scheme.
Michigan
This rare sneaker was released in limited quantities in August 2019, as a special edition colorway commemorating the University of Michigan's Wolverines.
The loud yellow and blue nubuck upper, combined with black detailing and an icy blue translucent outsole was a celebrated colorway, particularly among sneakerheads and University of Michigan fans.
Olympic
Released in 2016 as a limited edition colorway, the 'Olympic' commemorates Rio de Janeiro's hosting of the Summer Olympics.
The white leather upper was accented with black and gold details reminiscent of the Olympic rings. An icy blue translucent outsole also added to the clean design.
The pair was highly sought-after due to its limited release.
The Fresh Prince of Air Jordan 5
The popular TV Series Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, that aired in the early 90s, was responsible for a lot of the hype surrounding the Air Jordan 5.
The 'Grape' in particular became a highly sought-after colorway after featuring in the show.
On Will Smith's 50th birthday, he was presented with a special pair of Air Jordan 5s by Jordan in thanks. Of the Gold edition, only 23 pairs were made!
