Saucony Trainer 80 Returns from the Archives

The Saucony Trainer 80 is back from the ‘70s archives, celebrating of heritage, innovation, and community. 

Originally released in 1978, the Trainer 80 made waves as a revolutionary running shoe, introducing high-density EVA foam for a smoother, more responsive ride. It stepped away from the clunky, outdated cardboard construction of its time, cementing Saucony’s reputation as a pioneer in performance footwear. Now, over four decades later, this retro icon returns, blending vintage aesthetics with modern sensibilities to cater to runners, creatives, and sneaker fanatics alike.

A Closer Look at the Saucony Trainer 80…

Honouring the past while looking toward the future, Saucony’s revival of the Trainer 80 spotlights two influential London-based communities: Balamii, the radio station and cultural hub, and Your Friendly Runners (YFR), a grassroots running collective. Though rooted in different expressions – music and running – both groups embody Saucony’s mantra, “Run As One,” demonstrating how shared values of creativity, culture, and connection can bring people together.

The campaign, produced by CANADA and directed by Joe Howat, pays homage to the Trainer 80’s late-1970s origins, juxtaposing its classic retro vibes with a contemporary lens. Featuring key members from Balamii and YFR, the visuals are a vibrant celebration of culture and individuality. Emerging artists like CKTRL, Goya Gumbani, and George Riley represent Balamii’s influence in music and art, while Oliver Hooson, Matt Horrocks, and other YFR members showcase the intersection of community and fitness.

For Saucony, this project isn’t just about footwear; it’s about connecting people and honouring the creativity that drives communities forward. “This campaign represents everything Balamii stands for – community and talent,” says James Browning of Balamii. Matt Horrocks of YFR adds, “It’s exciting to bring back a true OG style that still feels super relevant today.”
