Have you already heard about Nike’s Air Works project? First introduced back in March 2026, the first class of Air Works designers now celebrate their official debut in May 2026. But what is Nike Air Works exactly, and which designers are we talking about?
Let’s take a closer look.
Nike Air Works is a research, development, and design programme. Under this project name, the Swoosh brings together a group of eight individual designers from Beijing, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Together, they will work with Nike mentors throughout 2026 to develop 3D-printed Air Max styles.

All of these designs are created in collaboration with Zellerfeld from Germany. Zellerfeld is a pioneering technology company specialising in the design and manufacture of fully 3D-printed and sustainable footwear.
The goal of the Nike Air Works project is for the Air Max designs of these talented young designers to showcase their individuality and celebrate their communities from around the world. With this project, the Swoosh aims to secure the future of Nike Air and allow it to be shaped by those who wear it.
Let’s have a look at the line-up of designers, shall we:

The participating Air Works designers will collaborate closely with their Nike mentors and external partners, a process that naturally shapes the final results. Furthermore, they are granted exclusive insight into the inner workings of Nike.
Throughout the programme, they will visit the Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation facility, the Department of Nike Archives, and the Nike Sport Research Lab. Additionally, they can utilise the Blue Ribbon Studio and the Bowerman Footwear Lab for both inspiration and to perfect the execution of their designs. In essence: access to all of Nike’s innovative power.
Each Air Max expression will build on Nike’s 40-year heritage of Air innovation, ensuring the future of Nike Air will be designed by those who wear it.

We think: with Air Works, Nike is no longer merely contemplating the future of footwear; you could say they are actively printing it. With this new approach, the brand is shifting the paradigm of what “Air” truly means by merging high-level design with cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
This innovation therefore represents an exciting move away from the traditional gas-filled bags that have defined the brand and its Air series since the late 1970s. The goal? Moving towards a sophisticated, structurally engineered future that relies on digital precision rather than physical moulds.
At the heart of the Air Works initiative is a relentless drive to create footwear that is hyper-tuned to the specific needs of the individual.
This new process also drastically accelerates the design cycle itself, something the team of designers will experience throughout the programme. Once, designing a sneaker took months of physical tooling. Now, many elements can be refined digitally and printed or adjusted in a matter of hours.
What we are most interested in is how this elite technology will translate into the Air Max lifestyle line and the future of Air Max sneakers.

We are already witnessing the first commercial results of this work, with silhouettes that feature more complex and visible geometries than ever before seen in the industry.
Throughout 2026, each of the local Air Works designers we mentioned earlier will release a limited-run, friends-and-family version of their shoe, to be celebrated within their communities over the coming year. The whole project will lead into Air Max Day 2027. Make sure to keep an eye on our socials, as well as our news page. This way, you don’t miss any developments of this special project.

Our verdict: Nike Air Works is far more than a laboratory experiment! It is a serious commitment to innovation and new technology. This could ensure the Swoosh remains at the very top of both performance engineering and global street fashion for years to come.
