The NIKE AIR MAX CLASSIC BW OG is a shoe that needs no introduction to UK Trainer obsessives – Originally released in 1991, this was the first Max that Nike went BIG with – BIG window in the sole, big range of colourways and big distribution saw this shoe rack up massive sales numbers as it became the must-have footwear of the early 90’s. The success of the shoe saw Nike keep it in production almost permanently, and this meant the BW was the first Air Max experience for a whole generation of heads – many of whom will still spout fond tales of their school days when they finally got a pair and didn’t take them off until they fell to bits.
However, the constant availability of the shoe was a curse as well as a gift, as they gradually fell out of favour with the obsessors and collectors, and became more associated with ASBO-ready unemployed youths in oversized tracksuit bottoms – Dark days. However, to help BW fans keep the faith Nike have re-released the original ‘Persian Violet’ versions on a number of occasions, reminding the world how good this shoe can look. This colourway really is the pinnacle of BW design, with that basic black/white contrasting canvas showing off the lines of the shoe, whilst the neon violet frames the enlarged air bubble and highlights the collar, embossed tongue and signature swoosh.
Will the NIKE AIR MAX CLASSIC BW OG do enough to wrestle the popularity crown back from the Air Max 1? Doubtful, but those looking to relive the early days of Air Max will appreciate them, and will need to move fast as quantities are limited.
