The SKEPTA X NIKE AIR MAX 97 SK combines Nike nostalgia with the grime MC’s love of London and Marrakech, and these themes were carried through to last night’s launch which was one of the most ambitious – and successful – events we’ve seen in years. Housed in a cavernous network of vaults and tunnels beneath railway tracks, the launch party mashed together elements of a Marrakech souk with a London street market for a fully immersive experience that perfectly showcased the shoe’s concept and design.

Each guest received a sealed envelope containing SK: ON AIR currency tokens which could be traded in at the event’s many market stalls, which ranged from a ‘boss man’ £1 shop selling phone covers, sweets and baked beans all the way up to a high-end jewellery store with luxurious gold and diamond pendants (hold tight the solid gold Uzi).

Moroccan rugs and patterns adorned the walls, while Siobhan Bell provided a suitably eclectic soundtrack for the crowds of trainer heads, grime fans and luminaries of the fashion and music worlds such as Virgil Abloh, A$AP Rocky and Skepta himself.

Exclusive Sk Air t-shirts and caps were available alongside items from Skepta’s Mains clothing line, and customiser Ryan Hawaii was on hand to put a bespoke twist on the clothing. Guests were pampered at the hair salon and the WAH Nails pop-up, the food and drink were plentiful, and there was even a well-stocked flower stall offering fresh bouquets for anyone in a romantic mood.

Of course, it wouldn’t have been a Skepta launch without a live performance, and the crowd were treated to a showcase from UK rising star J Hus, who’s built a huge buzz off a slew of features and this year’s ‘Common Sense’ album release. The live show was followed by sets from Logan Sama and BBK’s DJ Maximum, rounding off a phenomenal event that redefined what a launch party can and should be.
