To many of us who enjoy their products simply for the world-class aesthetics, it’s easy to forget that Nike’s success is down to their desire to innovate. The NIKE FREE 2014 RUNNING COLLECTION for 2014 continues the technical advancements established in previous seasons, and refines the styling to keep things looking fresh visually.
Featuring the NIKE FREE 3.0 FLYKNIT, NIKE FREE 4.0 FLYKNIT, and NIKE FREE 5.0, the new collection represents some of the most technologically advanced running shoes in the market right now. Rob Dolan, Senior Footwear Design Director at Nike Running, explains what has gone into the development process behind these groundbreaking shoes:
“By utilising new technologies and the principles of natural motion, we’re really able to allow the foot to move for the runner in a way we’ve never been able to do before.”
During the research and development process, careful study of the foot in motion led to a key breakthrough: while runners move forward in a linear fashion, their feet don’t move in a perfectly straight line – the foot tends to roll slightly when striking the ground. From this insight, the design team knew that multi-directional flexibility was key to delivering natural motion in a shoe. To achieve this, the 2014 collection features three of the most significant developments in Nike Free since its 2004 launch: hexagonal flex grooves on the sole, an anatomical shape (with a heel that rolls when the foot strikes the ground) and an ultra-light Flyknit upper.
The NIKE FREE 3.0 FLYKNIT offers the most flexibility and a four-millimeter heel-to-forefoot offset, the Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit provides flexibility with more cushioning at a six-millimeter offset, and with an eight-millimeter offset the Nike Free 5.0 is a happy medium between natural flexibility and a traditional running shoe.
