Designed by Andrew Nyssen in 2010, the New Balance 2002 is manufactured by New Balance in the United States. A new design of the New Balance 2002 model was released in 2020, 10 years after the original.
Since the quality of the 2002 improved so much, the sneaker became more expensive and popular. After 30 years, the running shoes were retailing for $250 instead of $100. At the height of the 'Dad Shoe' trend, the New Balance 2002 was known for its chunky design.

Tetsuya Shono, the creative director of New Balance's Japanese division, replaced the original sole with the N-ERGY sole in 2020. The N-ERGY sole provides enhanced comfort and shock absorption during physical activity.
