Just when you thought the ASICS GEL-1130 had comfortably settled into its role as a go-to retro runner, ASICS has gone and chopped the back off. Enter: the ASICS GEL-1130 Mule.
Here is what you need to know.

Leaning fully into the ongoing obsession with ease, hybridity, and lazy luxury, the GEL-1130 Mule reimagines the early-2000s silhouette as a slip-on. No heel tab, no fuss, no pretending you’re going for a run.
At first glance, not much has changed in the design compared to the 1130 model. We still get that familiar layered upper, breathable mesh base, and the kind of technical detailing that made the original special. Underfoot, GEL cushioning remains, so the typical known ASICS comfort is given, too. But let’s be honest, this isn’t about performance anymore.
The mule format pushes the GEL-1130 firmly into lifestyle territory, joining the wider wave of backless everything. It’s the same shift we’ve seen across the industry in a lot of classic sneaker styles. Have you seen the Samba mule, for example? Or the PUMA Speedcat mule? These are just a couple of examples; the mule is going hard this summer, 2026. Read more about all that here.
What makes this ASICS GEL-1130 release so interesting is how natural it feels. This isn’t a wild, out-of-nowhere redesign. We feel the GEL-1130 Mule looks like it was always heading in this direction, since the model already had that slightly awkward, normcore energy.
We have seen three colourways so far that stay true to ASICS’ DNA, with clean whites, metallic silvers, and muted tones doing most of the work. Nothing too loud, nothing trying too hard. We get a grey-silver, black-silver, and brown-silver edition to begin with:

Whether you’re calling it progressive or just peak laziness probably depends on your tolerance for backless footwear. What is your opinion on this design? Let us know via Instagram @thedropdate!
We can expect the ASICS GEL-1130 Mule ‘Grey & Silver‘, ‘Silver & Brown‘ and ‘Black & Silver‘ to be available via ASICS and selected retailers sometime in the summer of 2026, maybe already in July!
