Picture Perfect: The Air Jordan 1 'Royal' Returns With a Box Straight Out of 1985

The Air Jordan 1 'Royal' hasn't seen a release in years, and Jordan Brand is bringing it back with a serious nod to sneaker history.

Under the style code IQ5495-005, the black-and-blue classic is currently pencilled in for an October 2026 release, and it's already generating buzz for one specific reason: the box it comes in.

A Closer Look at the Air Jordan 1 'Royal'...

Built on the Air Jordan 1 High OG frame rather than the later High '85 cut, this pair keeps things close to the original 1985 release. The toe box, Swooshes, heel and ankle all get dressed in Game Royal leather, with textured blue leather also showing up around the collar and heel.

The midsole stays clean in white, while the outsole picks up that same Game Royal shade, a colour split that mirrors the very first pair from four decades ago. Jordan Brand also keeps the original panel proportions, collar height and Nike Air branding on the tongue intact, rather than reaching for the taller '85 silhouette.

We're into this one. It's a genuinely thoughtful retro build with real love for the history behind it.

The Story Behind the Royal Colourway

The Royal colourway ties back to one of the most famous images in Jordan history: a 1985 shoot in Oregon by photographer Chuck Kuhn, later nicknamed "Flight Guy," showing a young Michael Jordan standing alone on an empty road. Jordan never actually wore this exact colourway in a game, it existed purely through that photo series, which is exactly what makes this release different.

For 2026, Jordan Brand is leaning all the way into that history. The box itself is wrapped in the original Flight Guy photo, and popping the lid reveals more shots from the same shoot on the inside. An extra set of laces is tucked in too, so the whole package doubles as a small piece of Jordan history.

It's also worth noting that Royal is one of the most referenced colourways from the AJ1's early days, even though, unlike other original colourways that were actually worn on court, this one only ever existed off it.

How about the Drop Date?

Jordan Brand hasn't confirmed an official European release date or retail price for the Air Jordan 1 'Royal' just yet. Internationally, October 2026 is the window being floated, with Nike and select Jordan Brand retailers.

The colourway isn't just landing in men's sizes either. Grade school, preschool, toddler and crib sizes are reportedly part of the rollout too, so the whole family can match.
