Nike Launches Legal Action Against CLOT Founder Edison Chen

2025-08-13T14:27:29

Nike has filed a lawsuit against Edison Chen, founder of Chinese streetwear label CLOT, and his company Juice Los Angeles for breach of contract. The sportswear giant is seeking USD 126,615.68 for “goods and services provided”, a figure initially misreported as over $126 million due to a clerical error.

The case comes more than a year after Chen ended CLOT’s long-running collaboration with Nike to partner with adidas, releasing models such as the CLOT Silk Gazelle and CLOT x adidas Superstar. CLOT had worked with Nike since 2006, producing sought-after designs blending Eastern influences with classic Nike silhouettes.

Nike’s action forms part of a wider legal strategy targeting former collaborators and designers. Recent examples include settlements with custom trainer maker Shoe Surgeon and Japanese brand BAPE over alleged trademark and design infringements.

Chen has not officially commented, though a recent Instagram post showing him in CLOT x adidas trainers with the caption “WORD!?” has been seen by some as a subtle response. The outcome of the case could set another marker in Nike’s tightening control over its brand.
