Old Trafford, 6 October 2001. England are 2-1 down to Greece, the clock has ticked past 90 minutes and a place at the 2002 World Cup is slipping away. Then the referee gives a free kick some 30 yards out, and the captain steps up. You know what happens next. Exactly 25 years on, adidas is marking that moment with the new David Beckham Predator, plus a faithful remake of the boot he wore that afternoon.

The Afternoon Beckham Carried a Nation

To understand why this one still gives people goosebumps, you have to rewind a bit. Three years earlier, Beckham had been sent off against Argentina at France '98 and found himself on the receiving end of some truly brutal treatment back home. By 2001 he was wearing the armband, and against Greece he was everywhere, covering every blade of grass while the rest of the team struggled to click.

England needed just a point to go straight through to the World Cup. Free kick after free kick had sailed off target that day. But deep into stoppage time, with the stadium holding its breath, he curled one more over the wall and into the top corner with his right foot. 2-2. Qualification sealed, and the image of Beckham sprinting off in celebration, Predator Precision on his feet, was burned into English football history for good.

adidas Football GM Sam Handy sums it up nicely, saying that few moments in football history capture the spirit of Predator quite like that free kick.

Old-School Leather, Modern Brains

The new David Beckham Predator takes its cues from the Predator Elite FT L-Tech concept and leans heavily into the craft side of things. The forefoot is built from premium leather (fusionskin), while a deep red leather fold-over tongue, finished with an embroidered Trefoil, brings back one of the most loved features in Predator history.

That Trefoil is a big deal, by the way. It's only the second time ever the logo has appeared on a Predator, and you'll spot it worked into the Three Stripes on both the lateral and medial sides. Beckham's own branding sits on the outer heel to finish things off, all wrapped up in a clean white and red colourway that nods straight back to 2001.
