UPDATED 11/01/24: Sick and tired of the cold winter months? Don’t worry – the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 1906R is bringing all the heat you need.
The new year may have only just begun, but that doesn’t mean that there’s any plans to take the foot off the gas in New Balance’s books. Returning to the collaborative field with none other than good friend and designer Salehe Bembury, the fiery kicks initially teased back in June are finally seeing the light of day.
Since 2020, the Boston-based retailer and acclaimed creative have been praised for their collaborative relationship. Delivering ice-cold releases like the 2002R ‘Peace Be The Journey’ and ‘Water Be The Guide’, it seems that sneaker connoisseurs are constantly hungry for whatever the alliance is serving. This time working atop the progressive NB 1906R silhouette, we’re receiving two striking palettes titled ‘Magma’ and ‘Lava’, due to cause big eruptions on the sneaker scene. So – let’s get into it.
Utilising the 1906R as its structural muse, this fiery capsule is not for the faint hearted. Kicking off with the ‘Magma’ colourway – an intense red bases the exterior, adorned with an electric blue exoskeleton. Touches of purple join in at the tongue, for a look that certainly won’t be missed in a crowd.
The ‘Lava’ offering reflects the hues of a blazing flame, expressing a vibrant gradient of red to yellow throughout the upper. A metallic silver structure compliments the grey lower, beside black accenting for an outspoken persona. Aligning with the science-themed visual campaign, both sneakers feature laboratory-esque iconography embellished onto the tongue.

Chuck us a handful of low-quality images of the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 1906R, and we’re hooked.
Over the last decade, creative director and visionary Salehe Bembury has proved that he’s a force to be reckoned with, from designing sneakers for Versace to his more recent partnership with Crocs. As we know, New Balance have also been killing it, with widely praised collaborations with Aimé Leon Dore and Action Bronson accumulating mass hype like it’s nothing.
Both NB and Bembury already share an impressive roster of collaborative sneakers, just take the New Balance 2002R, 990v2 and 574 for example. After unofficial images were teased by Bembury himself, rumours began to spread like wildfire. Everyone is hungry to know more – and this time, it’s the New Balance 1906R on the menu.
Within this well-anticipated Salehe Bembury x New Balance 1906R creation we can see a vibrant reimagining that’s far removed from the 1906R ranges’ conventionally tame colour palette. The sneakers eye-catching mesh base flaunts a yellow to fiery red gradient from the toe box straight through to the heel. Adorned with a striking metallic silver that swarms the sole unit and webbed upper overlays, these kicks don’t look like they’ll be forgotten anytime soon.
