Introducing the Reebok Pump
Introduced in 1989, the Reebok Pump was a direct answer to Nike’s Air technology, revolutionising footwear with its unique innovation: an inflatable air pouch in the tongue that allowed for a personalised, supportive fit—especially around the ankle.
Developed in partnership with design firm Design Continuum, the Pump stood out for its futuristic aesthetic and interactive appeal, hitting the market at a premium price of $170.
Its most iconic moment came in 1991, when NBA star Dee Brown famously pumped up his shoes courtside before delivering his winning dunk in the Slam Dunk Contest—securing the Pump’s legendary status.
Reebok later expanded the Pump into other sports and pushed the envelope with designs like the InstaPump Fury—a laceless, tech-driven silhouette that became a streetwear icon.
While its mainstream presence faded over time, the Pump endures as a cult favourite, kept alive through nostalgic reissues and cutting-edge collaborations
