Introducing the adidas Rivalry
The adidas Rivalry, first introduced in 1986, is a sneaker deeply rooted in basketball heritage. Designed by Jacques Chassaing for rising NBA rookie Patrick Ewing, it was built to capture the energy of a new era in the sport.
Ewing had already made his mark at Georgetown University with a 1984 championship win and later added an Olympic gold medal alongside icons like Michael Jordan. Recognising his momentum, adidas signed him in 1985, paving the way for the creation of the Ewing Collection.
Among its highlights was the adidas Rivalry, a more approachable counterpart to the premium Conductor. With its high-top support, bold colorways, and street-ready edge, the Rivalry carried Ewing’s influence to a wider audience at a more accessible price point.
Though initially positioned as a budget-friendly option, its enduring design and cultural relevance soon elevated it into a style staple. From basketball courts to hip-hop stages, skate culture, and streetwear, the Rivalry has proven itself a timeless classic.
