Fifteen years ago, few would have guessed that a 2009 performance runner would become a cornerstone of New Balance’s modern lineup. 

Yet here we are, with the 1906R’s revival in 2022 sparking a wave of creative reinterpretations. From the rugged ‘Protection Pack’ 1906D to the bold and unexpected 1906 loafer, New Balance has transformed this silhouette into a versatile platform for innovation. Now, the brand is setting its sights on 2025 with the introduction of the New Balance 1906W, a contemporary reimagining of the retro runner featuring FantomFit technology.

Drawing inspiration from 1906W from heritage, FantomFit first made headlines in 2018 with the New Balance 950v2, a shoe designed for U.S. military personnel under a Department of Defence contract. Repurposed for lifestyle wear, the 1906W captures the same robust spirit while offering the everyday versatility that the Boston-based label is known for.

Slated for a Spring 2025 launch, the 1906W will debut in four minimalist palettes: black, white, grey, and navy blue. Each iteration emphasizes simplicity while letting the innovative design details shine.

The 1906W strips back excess in favor of a streamlined, tech-driven aesthetic. At its core is FantomFit, an advanced material engineered for lightweight durability and ergonomic support. Unlike its usual hidden placement, FantomFit takes the spotlight here, with a diamond-patterned exterior enveloping both sides of the upper. This design not only enhances structural support but also adds a modern, futuristic edge to the sneaker’s overall look.
