The REEBOK NPC UK II EL ‘LEAD’ is a slick update of an old favourite, and is now available to add to your collection.
The Newport Classic – renamed the ‘NPC’ in recent years – was designed in 1985, making the brand’s clean aesthetic available for the tennis court. Tennis dress codes demanded a level of minimalism, making the Reebok an obvious choice given its devotion to crisp, unfussy lines and smooth textures. Back in the day, the NPC was available only in white and cream colourways, so you can see how it would have been a popular choice at Wimbledon, as well as among terrace casuals, ravers and any of the many British people who have a deep affection for bright white trainers. The soft leather and clean-looking silhouette made it a hit, and along with the Reebok Classic, something of a familiar, evergreen sight across the UK. This latest drop moves away from the bright whites but keeps the old school favorite relevant and up to date. Reebok has kept the sleek, low-cut no-nonsense silhouette and added a rich nubuck suede upper. An EVA midsole provides soft cushioning while the gum rubber outsole maintains the vintage look. The suede is in a ‘Lead’ colourway while the tongue and heel details are in a contrasting white, keeping things interesting.
