With the title of NIKE SB FEDERATION KITS, you could be fooled into thinking that someone is sucking the fun out of skating – an activity that’s generally thought of as defying convention – but look closer and you’ll soon change your mind. Enlisting the creative brilliance of Dutch artist Piet Parra, Nike SB is releasing a series of short-sleeve tops that connect to the geographies of the United States, Japan, France and Brasil. The connection to each of the locales is clear to see in the brightly coloured illustrative designs that feature across all four pieces in the collection.
“When we talked to Piet about the designs, we asked him, ‘Take what’s happening in Tokyo out of the picture for a second; if you were to make a kit on your own, what would it be?’” says Donavan Harris, the Nike Design Lead for the kits. As a finishing touch, each kit features a bird that represents the spirit of each country: the crane for Japan, the eagle for the US, a rooster for France and the toucan for Brasil.
