The New Balance 1500
In 1989, Steven Smith, who designed the classic New Balance 574 and 997, introduced the New Balance 1500.
Today, the 1500 is the flagship sneaker for the New Balance factory in Flimby, Cumbria. The 1500 series is also marked with "Made in the UK" on many models.
According to Smith, he wanted to give the 1500 sneakers a luxury feel similar to a Cadillac or Rolls Royce. This was accomplished by incorporating "plush suspensions" into the midsole and using "pigskin suedes" as an equivalent to Connolly leather (Connolly Leather supplies leather to Rolls Royce).
The 1500 features a classic silhouette with a mesh and suede upper that offers breathability and comfort. The sleek lines and smaller "N" logo on the side distinguish it from other New Balance models.
New Balance's ENCAP technology provides cushioning and stability to the 1500, which was originally designed for running. Newer versions of the shoe still use this technology.
