Introducing the Air Jordan 16
The Air Jordan 16, released in 2001, marked Michael Jordan’s return to the court with the Washington Wizards and introduced a new chapter for the Jordan Brand. Designed by Wilson Smith III, it was the first Air Jordan not created by Tinker Hatfield, signalling a fresh design direction while still honouring the brand’s innovative legacy.
The AJ16 is notable for its removable shroud, allowing wearers to transition seamlessly between performance and style - symbolising Jordan’s evolution from athlete to businessman. It combined Zoom Air and Max Air cushioning for balanced comfort and responsiveness, alongside a patent leather toe cap and a semi-translucent outsole, giving the shoe a bold, contemporary look.
