When the 96 first dropped, it had its work cut out to follow the legacy of previous year’s Air Max 95 – to be fair, any shoe would have struggled to compete with that one. Whilst the Air Max 95 will go down in history as one of the most important footwear designs, its successor (also designed by Sergio Lozano) was no turkey: the teardrop/tooth-shaped panels on the lateral and medial sides were distinctive and original, whilst the sole unit and subtle branding kept things in line with its forerunner. For this new retro, there have been slight tweaks throughout the shoe – the Air bubbles have been slimmed down and the midsole now has more subtle contours – but the main characteristics are still present. Like a fine wine, the 96 has aged well and it will be interesting to see how a younger audience responds to this classic Air Max design. As an extra touch of authenticity
