‘Welcome to the future of footwear’ say our pals at Nike, as they have released in the U.S. the long awaited NIKE HYPERADAPT 1.0, with its much-vaunted adaptive lacing system.

The Drop Date first saw the HyperAdapt concept at Nike’s annual Innovation Summit back in March. While the aesthetics of the silhouette and shape looked futuristic enough, it was the adaptive lacing tech that really piqued our interest the most – then and now. Nike calls the system EARL (an acronym for Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing). But how does it work? When the wearer places his or her foot into the shoe, the heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten, as it electronically adjusts to the contours of the wearer’s foot. This provides a personal, customized fit that Nike says will make the silhouette feel like an extension of your body. For further adjustments, there are two buttons on the side that allow you to tighten and loosen the fit, allowing you to adjust it until it feels perfect.

It sounds so sci-fi, right? The original premise of self-lacing shoes was, of course, first touched upon in ‘Back to the Future Part II’, and the HypeAdapt release comes just a couple of months after the Nike Mag lottery where bidders could secure a pair of the legendary self-lacing boots that were first seen on Michael J. Fox’s feet in the 1989 film.

The NIKE HYPERADAPT 1.0 debuted in limited quantities in a Black/White Blue Lagoon colourway. Americans need to cough up $720 for the privilege of being among the first to own the futuristic concept trainer. What do you think? Will you grab a pair when they appear on our shores? Keep checking back for the latest info on if and when these reach the UK…
