Of all the shoes to make a comeback in 2013, the NIKE AIR PYTHON SP is easily one of the most unexpected pieces to slither out of the archives! This lesser-spotted 1987 lifestyle shoe took the upper panelling from the Air Jordan II, midsole cues from the Air Force II and mixed them with a hefty dose of snakeskin to striking effect. Why? Good question. Let’s just say that if your options were either selling crack rock or having a wicked jumpshot, you were probably in the former category if you were rocking these.

Whilst we all know how pivotal ’87 was for sneaker design thanks to that visible air bubble, the year was a tipping point in Hip-Hop terms too. From Public Enemy’s debut through to LL cool J getting soppy on the radio, hip-hop culture was blowing up globally, taking brash drug dealer chic with it, and causing brands like Troop to become massive overnight. As usual, Nike were ahead of the curve, and the limited availability and lux materials on these were made for bragging rights not on-court performance. In many ways Air Python is the grandaddy of today’s ultra-limited hype shoe – the Air Yeezy, and for that reason it makes sense to see these back around again.

Whilst 80’s legend Terry Nutkins wouldn’t have approved of those OG’s (RIP Terry!) the new drop features debossed print instead of real Snakeskin, alongside premium full grain leather – If the materials are on point, these could be the best resurrected reptiles since Jurassic Park.

The NIKE AIR PYTHON SP drops in limited numbers at 00:00hrs BST on Saturday 21.9.13 (midnight tonight) and as always we’ve got you covered via the link-through below.
