The NIKE AIR MAX ZERO RIFT BLUE was revealed for last year’s #AIRMAX Day, and will now be making a return exactly one year later.

In case you missed it last year, here is a little history lesson: Tinker Hatfield, the genius designer who brought the NIKE AIR MAX 1 to life, may have made a solid step with the first model way back in 1987, but that wasn’t the first Air Max design. This recent revelation has been pushed beyond simple folklore and brought to life in the form of the NIKE AIR MAX ZERO, which was deemed too futuristic at the time. Looking at the shoe here, it’s hard to believe just how advanced – and even prophetic – this original design was. Tinker designed the upper to be comfortable and form-fitting, with a tipless vamp – an idea borrowed from the 1985 Nike Sock Racer. The original sketch also featured an external heel strap without a heel counter: a design concept that remained unseen until the Nike Air Huarache released in 1991. In the words of Nike themselves, Hatfield had designed a shoe so advanced it could not be produced.

There may be some modern-day technologies being employed here to make the idea a reality – taped seams and the mesh forefoot section (reminiscent of the Trainerendor and Powerlines) are relatively cutting-edge – but the shape and profile evokes a strong feeling of nostalgia. “There was an Air Max retrospective on display, complete with early prototypes and samples that had never seen the light of day,” says Graeme McMillan, the Nike designer tasked with bringing the Air Max Zero to life. “It was like an archaeological dig in terms of the items you don’t usually get to see unless you work there”. The neoprene inner sock has been used extensively over the years, becoming a popular and functional feature on many favourites, whilst D-ring lace eyelets are durable and easy to use. And, as you’d expect, the Air Max 1 Ultra outsole (as seen on the Air Max 1 Ultra Moire), with its cored-out Phylon construction fits perfectly here too. There have been many Air Max releases over the years, but we think this is a priceless addition to the line-up.

The rerelease of the NIKE AIR MAX ZERO RIFT BLUE is aptly happening on #AIRMAX Day, SATURDAY 26 MARCH. When the time comes it will be available via the banner below.
