NIKE AIR MAX 90 JACQUARD

When we first heard about Nike’s introduction of one-piece uppers, we wondered how this would work when applied to our favourite silhouettes from the past. Any concerns were immediately put to rest when the first range of Hyperfuse models took the stage, and seeing new executions such as this NIKE AIR MAX 90 JACQUARD, it’s clear that there’s a lot of mileage in the concept yet. Moving on from plain colour blocking and bold panel fills, this release sees an interesting jacquard treatment used extensively. Let’s dig a bit deeper…

The jacquard process takes four coloured yarns and threads them through a black base layer: a traditional technique from yesteryear that positively futuristic on this shoe. Careful manipulation during the weave process results in different colours having priority on the outside surface – the possibilities to create interesting panels are off the scale with this application. Although the uppers are one-piece, it wouldn’t be an Air Max 90 without following the contours and sections, and it actually works really well on here.

Aesthetics are all very well, but what does the Jacquard process do for performance? The first thing you’ll notice is the featherlight quality of the shoe: compare these to a regular Air Max 90 and you’ll feel the difference straight away. The jacquard process eliminates most of the seams on the upper section and, therefore most of the potential stitching problems too. But the biggest advantage is the level of flexibility that the one-piece construction offers. You can move your foot without restriction, yet the clever construction holds the foot in place like a cradle. It’s the kind of thing that has you scratching your head and wanting to work out how Nike created it. Clever tech keeps on winning.

When you reach the bottom section of the shoe, you’ll notice that things are slightly different again: the back half has the usual visible Air wondow, but moving towards the forefoot, you’ll notice the flexible Free technology making an appearance again. With the entire shoe having a theme of flexibility, it’s the perfect sign-off.

We’ve seen a few colourways of this shoe already (the green and blue is also very nice) and we hope there will be more to follow in the coming months. In the meantime, you can book your NIKE AIR MAX 90 JACQUARD experience right now, via the link-through below.
