The long simmering romance between J. Crew and New Balance shows no signs of burning out, as the retailer and Boston-based brand released details of the latest fruit of their 11-year love affair, the NEW BALANCE FOR J.CREW 998 GREENBACK EDITION.
Moving from romance to history, the “Greenback” takes its inspiration from the paper currency that was issued by the U.S. Government during the country’s Civil War – earning the nickname “Greenback” because the back of the note was printed green (very literal those Yanks). As such, the 998 Greenback’s upper is a bright green, reminiscent of American dollar bills, with gold accents, most notably the NB logo and a “998” stitched on the tongue. The look is finished with white laces, sockliner and ABZORB midsole. The kicks are outfitted in premium suede with a touch of leather, and a perforated toebox. The New Balance 998 is one of the brand’s greats from that classic period during the late ’80s and early ’90s, and thanks to J. Crew, with its keen eye for American heritage and vintage looks, the two companies have introduced some killer colourways. The Greenback continues that fine tradition.
