Some people think that attaching a sole that looks like a packet of Monster Munch to a running silhouette makes for a perfect trail shoe. Luckily, the ADIDAS ORIGINALS ZX500 TRAIL shows us how to do things properly when it comes to mud, rain and traumatic terrain. As we’ve cleared out our summer shoes and started looking for something a bit more substantial for the winter months, this model has gone straight into the daily wear selection.
The regular ZX 500 is a great shoe and well-loved by us here at The Drop Date. The Trail edition beefs up the important areas, adding a chunky midsole that will stop you slipping in the torrents of rain and muck we’re likely to experience over the next few months. For a substantial shoe, it feels surprisingly light and comfortable on-foot, which is probably a useful attribute if you’re planning to go off-road. Flip them upside-down for a minute and you’ll find a nice juicy Torsion Bar wedged in amongst the rubber, which is only going to help stability and feel even further.
The killer masterstroke comes in the form of the Cordura nylon upper section, which will outlast the bad weather by a considerable amount of time. Aside from being durable and water resistant, it looks good, especially next to the dark grey suede panels and leather heel tab. These early samples don’t show it, but there’s a big Cordura tag on the side just to let everyone know not to mess with your feet. The Ghilly lacing system means you’ll probably be able to get these on your feet without removing your gloves, which is always a bonus.
There are two colours available at the moment, but we think these crag, solid grey and light clay versions are the ones to get. These are out now and the confirmed list of UK stockists can be found via the link-through below, and we’re looking forwards to seeing what other classics get the winter treatment this season.
