If you purely went on the description of ‘white and green adidas’, it doesn’t sound that remarkable. This adidas Originals x United Arrows zx500 OG AU needs to be seen in the flesh to be fully appreciated. As part of the Japan Pack series, which also features nice collaborative models from ZOZOTOWN with the Campus 80s and the X-Large Superstar 80s, this take on the ZX 500 is extremely clean.

The ZX 500 might have originally been released in 1984 but it’s still just as relevant almost 30 years later. It’s one of a number of ‘safe’ models to pick for adidas collaborations (HUF’s pinstripe version for the aZX project was amazing and the Olympic ‘Your Story’ series featured a fantastic all-suede version by Shaniqwa Jarvis), as there’s little anyone could do to lessen the appeal: the 500 has a good shape and lots of interesting panel sections, which has resulted in some great colourways over the years. Take a proper look through the adidas archives and you’ll see plenty of ZX 500 eye candy.

To see the 500 here again and presented in such an appealing way is refreshing. At a time when the keywords on the trend reports say ‘gaudy’ and ‘neon’, the United Arrows crew have taken a leaf from the summer guidebook and gone with a make-up that has ‘Wimbledon’ written all over it. A tennis filter applied to a running shoe sounds wrong, but when you look at the final product, there’s no denying how good it looks. The white, light grey and green components are complimented with a dash of lime green that shows up on the offside midsole, the insole and once again on the gum-coloured tread pattern underneath.

The thin nylon tongues give a roomier feel than some of the suede and leather versions we’ve seen in the past and the always-stable sole unit holds things together on a light and breathable top section. Suede toe pieces, forest green stripes and ballistic-style mesh on the front give the shoe an appropriately premium look and feel.

On one hand, it’s a white and green adidas shoe… but have you ever seen one that looks as nice as this? No, we didn’t think so. These deserve to be worn with no-show trainer socks and a pair of shorts: denim bleed from a pair of jeans on these beauties would be sacrilege.
