The ADIDAS ORIGINALS CAMPUS is back to remind us all that sometimes the old ones really are the best.
As much as we enjoy all the knit uppers, space-age lacing systems and unnecessary zips that dominate the footwear game at the moment, it’s debatable if all those new hype releases will have lasting appeal. Which is why the timing is perfect for adidas to take us back to basics with the Campus. There are only a handful of trainers that are truly timeless, and the Campus is definitely one of them: its stripped-back simplicity and that just-right silhouette – the perfect proportions, not too slim, not too bulky – genuinely look just as good now as they did when the shoe was first released as the ‘Tournament’ basketball trainer more than four decades ago. Reintroduced as the Campus in 1980, this subtle beauty really hit its stride in the ’90s when the Beastie Boys helped it become the shoe of choice for skaters, hip-hop heads and a wide range of other subcultures. And while it never got as much glory as its siblings the Superstar and Gazelle, this under-the-radar banger with its myriad colourways has confidently earned OG status without ever needing to shout about it.
There’s no need to muck about with such a beautifully simple shoe, and in our view the Campus has always worked best with bold suede uppers offset by white 3-Stripes, heel patch and sole. The folks at adidas obviously agree, as the new releases channel that classic ’90s appeal with three strong new offerings in Core Black, Grey and Collegiate Burgundy. The midsole gets a slight vintage treatment which adds to the nostalgic appeal, while the laces and even the ‘Campus’ text stay tonal to enhance the minimal aesthetic. Photos don’t really do justice to these new releases, so we took all three out for a spin to showcase their classic colours on the streets of London in our latest video.
