The Y-3 SPORT AW16 COLLECTION marks the return of adidas’ and Yohji Yamamoto’s performance-driven offshoot.
The Y-3 Sport imprint takes Yamamoto’s future-goth-ninja aesthetic and melds it seamlessly (or rather, taped-seamedly) with adidas’ sporting prowess. The new winter collection is based around fashion’s favourite non-colour black, with charcoal and white accents adding sleek tech-looking interest. Highlights of the apparel range include the Airflow Jacket with its futuristic asymmetrical zip closure, the convertible Padded Parka Jacket with reversible liner vest, and the Sport Wool Jacket which features Tron-like reflective heat-welded detailing. The mid-layers are just as strong, boasting imaginative design details such as ergonomic mesh panelling and elongated necks with cut-out holes for your ears.
Of course, no Y-3 project would be complete without the shoes – and in this case, we’re treated to a trio of winter-ready trailblazers executed with Yamamoto’s signature futuristic flair. The Sport Trail X combines a neoprene upper with hiking-inspired lacing, a velcro ankle strap and a grippy Continental rubber outsole to produce a boot that looks like something you might wear to explore the palladium mines of Neptune in the 25th Century. The Sport Approach Reflect looks like what you might wear while relaxing in your orbiting hotel pod afterwards, with its comfy Primeknit ankle collar and cushy full-length Boost midsole. Lastly, the women’s Sport Run X mixes hiking details with Boost sole comfort to create a rugged low-top that looks like something you could wear for either of the two previous activities as long as you have a dainty foot size. And just like the apparel, the footwear models all boast advanced performance to match their striking looks.
