The new STÜSSY X MR PORTER MADE IN CALIFORNIA CAPSULE COLLECTION is a sun-bleached road trip through Californian surf nostalgia.
The exclusive new range forms the bedrock of premium retailer Mr Porter’s new series of Californian collab capsules: after all, what brand represents the Golden State better than Stüssy? The pioneering West Coast imprint pretty much single-handedly invented streetwear back in the early ’80s, bringing the relaxed, sun-drenched surf style of its home state to an eager global audience. And despite the whims and passing trends of the fashion world, Stüssy still sits at the top of its game more than 35 years later, appealing to the youth and their nostalgia-seeking parents alike.
The new capsule collection has its roots firmly in the mid-1990s (AKA the Golden Age of Everything), when Californian surf and streetwear was in its heyday with Stüssy at the helm. The instant winner here is the Hawaiian print that adorns two matte-satin short-sleeve shirts and a matching set of shorts, perfect for channelling either the timeless cool of Christian Slater in ‘True Romance‘ or the dishevelled vibes of Nick Nolte’s 2012 police mug shot, depending on your lifestyle. A soft pink coach jacket and a ripstop field jacket take care of the outerwear, while pigment-dyed loopback sweatshirts come with embroidered logos for the colder evenings. A selection of t-shirts come in washed-out colours and bright neons with the classic Stüssy logo sitting alongside ocean-themed illustrations, and the capsule is rounded off with an embroidered ripstop cap in faded burgundy. Stüssy design director Nin Truong describes it as a collection “for the dirtbag who only gets out of bed for waves”, and we’re into it.
