Futuristic Fabrics: The NIKELAB ADVANCED APPAREL EXPLORATION 1.O COLLECTION sees the sportswear giants step the innovation game up another notch.
Nike have long been leaders in sportswear innovation, constantly pursuing revolutionary techniques to improve the functionality, durability and comfort of their products. Nike’s latest pioneering effort comes in the form of the NIKELAB ADVANCED APPAREL EXPLORATION 1.0 COLLECTION, otherwise known as the only slightly more catchy Nike A.A.E 1.O Collection. Sound a bit scientific? Well it is, as Kurt Parker, Nike’s VP of Apparel Design explains the trial and error process the brand go through in order to improve their garments: “In apparel design, we have forever been combining multiple materials, depending on the problem we are solving, often resulting in the build up of seams and complexity. Sometimes this creates a new problem as we are solving another, but over time, our understanding of the body in motion and new manufacturing techniques have started to converge.”
As technology increasingly intertwines itself into our everyday lives, it seems fitting that something as basic and practical as our clothing be enhanced by the latest forward facing strides in manufacturing techniques. Nike brought in engineers from their Flyknit team, alongside computational designers to create this new collection, pairing digitally generated motion maps with specific environmental factors to create a non-conventional yet wholly utilitarian garment. In essence, the data produced by the body mapping has been stress-tested in a variety of urban environments to create a code or algorithm, which once run through the Swoosh’s state-of-the-art knitting machines, creates a single layer, seamless knitted product that is hyper-adapted to modern living.
