High fashion’s flirtation with streetwear reaches its logical conclusion with the forthcoming LOUIS VUITTON X SUPREME FW17 COLLABORATION, blowing the minds of fashionistas and hypebeasts alike while simultaneously threatening to destroy their bank balances.
While at first glance the combination seems strange (especially given LV’s cease-and-desist against Supreme back in 2000), in reality it makes a lot of sense. High-end brands have been hankering after a piece of streetwear’s “edgy youth appeal” (PR talk) for a minute now, and Supreme pretty much wrote the book on subcultural hype. Furthermore, Louis Vuitton menswear designer Kim Jones used to work for Gimme 5 in the UK when they were distributing Supreme back in the day, and he’s a well-known streetwear and trainer fan who has also recently put out several Nike collaborations. The jury’s out on whether this new collab will alienate would-be customers, or help bring high fashion and streetwear ever closer; but either way, there’ll be no escaping it if you plan on using the internet at any point over the next year…
