Sneakers or Trainers?

Did you know that people in the UK refer to ‘Sneakers’ as ‘Trainers’?

The term ‘Sneakers’ originated in the late 18th century in America, where the soft rubber sole enabled people to ‘sneak’ up on others. But the British took up the term ‘Trainers’ as these types of shoes were mostly used for sports or training.

They technically mean the same thing, with both terms referring to shoes designed for active use and with rubber soles, but while sneakers is a broader term covering all types of rubber-soled shoes, trainers tend to be specific to athletic training, such as weightlifting in the gym.

Even more confusingly, sneakers can also be referred to as ‘Tennis Shoes’ in America, or ‘Runners’ in Australia!
